The Walt Disney Co. lowered its pre-tax fourth-quarter profits statement by $74 million, reflecting the expected flop of its $140 million animated movie Treasure Planet, the Reuters news service reported. The expensive SF retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Treasure Island took in a measly $16.5 million at the box office during the five-day Thanksgiving weekend in the United States and Canada, the news service reported.
The failure of Treasure Planet is also raising questions about the future direction of Disney's animation unit amid reports that its chief, Thomas Schumacher, was already considering leaving the division, Reuters reported. Disney had already said that Treasure Planet was the last of the series of big-budget animated blockbusters.
