Overclocking the Athlon and heat problems
Recently I have been seeing how much more mhz I can milk out of my processor. I have had a few problems that maybe you guys can help with.
System restarting:
I had some serious problems with my old motherboard after putting in a geforce 4, it was just a micro MSI kt7 style motherbard. I found that it was overheating. I tried to monitor the temperature but it didn't appear as if it was overheating staying around 45degrees. The system would crash and the only way I could start it up was to take out the processor turn on the system. Turn it of again. Sometimes a bios reset was needed as well.
I got fed up and got a new tower case. Then a Zalman heat sink and fan. Then an MSI kt3 Ultra 333mhz motherboard, and put in some DDR ram. I also have 2 case fans. Now I have overclocked the processor to 1250mhz using the 12.5x multiplier. If I use the 13x or 14x however it runs at something like 600mhz or 700mhz (I can't remember exactly but the maths would suggest it was halving the clock speeds).
Now when running normalclocked if the temp gets over 50degrees C then the system restarts. Better than the other motherboard at least, but why only 50degrees C. Is there something flawed with some of the Athlon t-birds?. Trying to raise the FSB just causes the system to reset as well. Currently my idol teps are 44degrees, maxing around 47degrees, but it is worringly close to 50degrees. I thought the limit was 90degrees, danger at 70 of stability and that you should try to stay around and under 50degrees.
So after completely changing my system except the Athlon 1.2ghz I don't know whats causing these problems. I have lots of air blowing around keeping it stable at the moment, but it does seem as though this is one unclockable processor. 50mhz is hardly worth it. I've seen much higher. I'd be happy with an extra 100mhz at least.
Any suggestions?
By the way I am using and have recently reapplied my thermal paste
