Just got Age of Mythology and have tried a few Random maps, as well as being most of the way through the Campaighn. IF you like the Age of Empires series, you will like this. It has some flaws,.. (What doesn't) but all in all it is very fun and playable. It has certainly held my attention.
I suppose it is a rip off of "Myth", but as I could never get the hang of the controls fro the "Myth" demo, I refused to shell out for it. Just plain to hard to play.
Age of Mythology on the other hand is the same as Age of Castles for control,.. But it is a true 3D world, with 3D models. And this works out remarkably well.
The best thing about the game? God powers! As you gain favor with your dieties (yes plural) they grant you special powers,.. up to 4. These range from rain to make your crops grow faster, a tunnel through the underworld into the enemies camp,.. right up to the heavy attack powers like "Meteor Storm" which pretty much blows everything to peices!
My favorite is the "Earthquake", send a flyimg unit over the enemies town center etc,... and let loose with an Earthquake,.. All the buildings fall down and units ion the ground that don't perish take damage,.. meanwhile your bird in the air gets off scott free!
Also you gain acces to some great Mythical units, which range from some standard human looking heros, all the way up to 8 headed hydras, krakens, Cylclops and giants! These are a blast,.. and there relative power to infantry etc. is actually almost too realistic. A group of 8 foot soldiers can easily be devestated by a pair of Hydra. Awesome!
Biggest complaints?
1. The standard units,... totally useless in combat. Once you have acces to mythical beasts,.. forgaet all the cavalry and footsoldiers.
2. As allways,.. CD-Check during the game. This disaster of a copy protection scheme wreaks havoc in most games that use it,.. in Age Of Mythology, I was 3/4 of the way through a scenario when it decided to crash while checking the CD,.. (which of course was there) and even with WinXPs vaunted stability this resulted in the typical CD-check total FREEZE! TOTAL!!! So with a hard reset of the system and reinstall of the graphics card I was eventually back up and running after three re-starts. Oh what fun. Had to start the scenario from the beginning of course.
Get this game if you have some time to kill.
