Hi Topher,
Try this:
Open up the Windows Registry Editor by clicking Start -> Run and type regedit and press enter.
Now locate HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop - Once you’ve located this area find the value HungAppTimeout set to 5000 if it isn’t already.
Next up locate WaitToKillAppTimeout which is in the same folder and set it to 4000 from the default of 20000 – This is one of the key elements of decreasing the time it takes to shut down.
Finally for this tweak to work locate the following HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControl and look for an option called WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change this to 2000. (Mine is set at 200).
This will get you shutting down much faster.
Take care........

Maybe it is because you have a lot of data that is being written to the HD before shutdown?
If you notice on NT 4 systems ut says it is writing that data wereas XP does not say it but is still technically NT like technology .... This is just my guess as I haven't got my MCSE books or cert yet ....

Hi Topher,
Also try this:
Go into IE/Tools/Internet Options/Temp Internet Files/Delete files. This will flush out all of the files that are no longer needed.
Then, go to IE/Tools/Internet Options/History/Clear History.
This will also help to speed up the shutdown process.
Take care.......

Hi Topher,
Last resort:
Make sure you are not flushing out your Pagefile on exit.
If you do, it will cause the system to hang or go snail slow.
Good luck, my brain is now empty........

Hi Topher,
By using Anti-Spy software.
If you have not set up software to flush, then you are probably not flushing it.
Sorry, can't be of much more help.
Brain drain has set in........

Right, I disbabled pagefile flush in local security policy, and it shutsdown a minute or so quicker now.
But, I was reading up on shutdown probs and I came across a possible problem. I read that XP and certen BIOS's don't recognise ACPI, now I check in the device manager and my pooter does recognise ACPI. But when I try to check the power options from the Ctrl panel XP locks up.
It was at this point that I remembered that in the event viewer there is a very frequent error with ACPI, i ignored it when I first saw it cause i didn't know what ACPI was at the time.
This is the error I get:
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0x71), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
Does anyone know what it means or how to fix it?
Maybe this has something to do with my extremely long shutdown times???
Topher. :D
BTW thanks for all your help so far... :D

Hmm, answeing my own questions here, apparently it's not a bad problem and you need to flash the BIOS to fix it...
Details (http://pub29.ezboard.com/fcyberwizardfrm6.showMessage?topicID=71.topic) if anyones interested.
