I purchased a Creative Ovation 16x DVD ROM and was wondering if the Sony 16x dvd in the orange box is better. I buy Sony Electronics whenever possible however their computer prodict support leaves much to be desired. I have been using soundblaster cards by Creative and they work fine. One quirky thing about some DVD drives (creative included) is that the make a scraping like noise when first accessing the disk. is that normal? Lite on brand does this as well. I was hoping that Sony did not. I don't think it affects the performance.

I have not notice it in my 16X Lite-on, but i've only had it for a few weeks. Mine is branded Pacific Digital, but the firmware identifies it as Lite-on. I think you will find that the Creative is branded as well, (...LG, Lite-on, Mitsumi?..) as Creative does not make there own drives.

I agree that Sony makes a decent drive, but I stopped buying Sony when "Big Brother" interfered. My sister purchased a Sony CD-RW. If she uses the bundled Software, any time she tries to Rip or back-up from a "Sony Records Company" CD the Software displays a warning about Sony's Copyrite, and closes!

Eeeek!!!

I couldn't live with that.
