I recently had an MOT where I passed, but they pointed out my front tires were borderline. So it's time to think about what to replace them with.

Currently I have some Dunlop SP Sport 2000 at the back. After a puncture incident 2 or 3 years ago, the fronts have a pair of Pirelli P6000 which are the ones that are getting a bit slick

Any suggestions? I'm not too concerned about life, stability and grip in both wet and dry are more important. Price and availability are moderate concerns.

The ones I have at the moment are 185/65 R14 86H whatever that means  width/thickness/diameter/speed rating?

I also noticed on them a treadwear value, 200 for the Dunlops and 180 for the Pirellis. Is that what I think it is, an indicator of durability? Is a bigger number better or worse?

easy one there buddy Sumitomo (parent company of dunlop)

Sumitomo SRIXON4
The Sumitomo SRIXON4 (Srix' on for) High Performance All-Season Radial was developed to meet the year-round needs of today's sports coupe and sedan drivers by blending dry and wet road performance with light snow and slush traction.

The SRIXON4 tread pattern blends performance with year-round traction. Independent shoulder and intermediate tread blocks enhance dry cornering and stability, while the tread's circumferential and parabolic curved grooves team up together to enhance wet traction and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. The SRIXON4's multi-sipes are engineered into the tread pattern to provide additional biting edges for light snow traction and its high performance all-season tread compound uses Ultra Micro Carbon Technology to blend all-season capability, rolling resistance and treadwear to meet a wide range of driving and weather conditions.

Internally, the SRIXON4's twin steel belts are reinforced by JointLess Band (JLB) technology which uses spirally wound nylon belt edge strips to provide long term integrity under high speed conditions while it reduces weight and helps provide more uniform ride quality.

Sumitomo SRIXON4 tires feature subtle black letter styling and are available in 65- and 60-series; H-speed rated sizes for 14" to 16" wheel diameters.(from tire rack)
