Just bought LOTR, and have since heard numerous reports of a batch of bodgy disks.....

I gots me one that hangs at the same spot every time.....while the vid shop in question has offered me a refund, they are telling me that the suppliers have informed them the dvd will not run on a playstation, xbox or (since I mentioned it) computer.......now this sounds like porkies to me...have watched a gazillion other dvds thru it before......now 45 minutes of viewing no probs......then crapola at the same bit??

just wondering if anyone knows about this sort of thing...

[edit - damn....can someone shift this to the dvd forum please.. :) ]

Wylie to be honest it sounds like the layer change than anything else at 45 minutes . What exactly is happening?

The playstation is known for being very fussy about disks but my dvdrom will pretty much play anything no problem even if my 2 dvd set top boxes dont like it.

The only problem I have read elseware is that one disk wont play at all so you may have a dodgy disk.

It just locks up.....image freezes on the screen..
I tool it back and got refunded. there were a few others doing likewise. Bought another one elsewhere and this works fine. It appears that there IS a bodgy batch out there. The suppliers overe here obviously know about it and have a stock excuse being fed out.

Thanks Ian!

Whats a "layer change" btw??

Well its basically a way of doubling the capacity of a dvd disk is to have two layers. When one layer finishes then the machine would pause for a second and move to the second layer.

My copy of LOTR runs fine on the PC as well,so it must be a bad batch. Over 7 gigs on that 1st LOTR disk! When will the burners be able to do that?
