The motoring world is waiting for the "soft-roader" market, which includes the Land Rover Freelander and Toyota RAV4. BMW is going to stun the motoring world in 2005 with the introduction of a three-door X3 and this version of the baby X5 can be converted to a small pick up.
It is already known that a five-door Freelander-sized X3 will go on sale in 2004 but now it seems that the Stuttgart car manufacturer is going to introduce a whole niche range of X3's. This will include a cabriolet version.
According to Auto Express the three-door model will be called an All Terrain Cruiser (ATC) and thanks to an innovative design it can be converted to a pick-up.
This can be done by removing the glass roof panel, folding the rear seats into the floor and dropping the tailgate.

The X3 cabriolet and ATC will probably have a smaller engine range than the five-door X3. With these two models there will be a choice of 2.0 four-cylinder and 3.0 six-cylinder petrol engines.
There will also be a 3-litre diesel version and as previously reported the X3's engines will be similar to those of the 3-series.
The X3 will be developed and built by Magna Steyr - part of SFT (Steyr-Daimler-Puch Fahrzeugtechnik) - in Graz, Austria.
