Hi Folks,

This is the latest state of affairs with my new machine:

Mobo: EPOZ 8K3A
CPU: XP1900+
HDD: Seagate Barracuda ST340016A (I know, but I got it for nothing)
RAM: 2x Samsung 256MB PC2700 CAS 2.5 (MY-003-SA)

Can I now have recommendations for which Graphics card? The box will only be a cruncher (no games and stuff) so it doesn't have to be "wonderful".

Thanks in advance.

Meady, who's starting to get a little "excited". :D

I'll check them out - thanks for the info NY.

I think I'm going to like it a lot, actually. I've read through several threads about it, and I've yet to see a complaint. The .417 Seti ripped through in just over 3 hours (!), and that was using a 5,400 HDD, so I can't wait to see what times I can get....:D

If its really only for crunching then a Radeon 7200 or GF2MX is really enough for your needs..youz could also do with a really cheap nVidia TNT2 .... i'm still using one in one of the crunchers :)

if it's really only for crunching then grab the cheapest card you can get, say a pci ati rage or something... most of the time i'm assuming there won't even be a moniter plugged in!

otherwise i highly recommend the radeon 7200... it is loads better than my gf2mx

It won't really need a flashy card, as it is only for crunching.

Do you think an old ATI Rage Pro 128 would be enough? I've read somewhere that the KT333 may cause hangups if the AGP is too slow.

If that's the case, I've got a nvidia GeForce 32 kicking about somewhere.....

A Rage PRO 128 should suffice, as to problems with too slow AGP...

That would be a little odd but I cant say I know the answer to that one...

I read the review and it is very interesting. I am looking to replace my KG7-Raid, I have narrowed it down to 2 or 3 mobo, here they are:

Abit KX7-333R
Epox EP-8K3A+
Iwill - XP333-R

now which one would give me the best overclocking with my Mushkin DDRam 2100 High Pref.
I need to get new mobo, so please advise. Which one has good dividers and stability for overclocking?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,

I can only tell you what i've found out since building the new rig.

The Epox is well designed, easy to install, and so far it's been steady as a rock!

Once I've ironed out some software issues, I'm going to start winding it up. According to the report I read on overclockers forum, it's easy to do, and the guy who did it wound up a XP2000 so that Sandra showed it running at 1997MHz, and stable too.

Hope this helps - I'm sure some other ppl can chip in about the other boards.

Meady.

Hi Jed,

I haven't started to "wind it up" yet, as I'm having a fistful of problems re-establishing ICS so my network can access the Internet (I've posted it on the Networking forum), but I sure intend to once I've got it all fixed.

It seems to be pretty straightforward, even for a newbie to overclocking, and I've got some powerful cooling in the box - two system fans (80mm), and a CPU fan like you wouldn't believe! I thought it might not fit past the capacitors, but it went in like a dream.

If this rig can crunch Seti WU's in sub 4hours, I'll be happy! :D
